CHARLOTTE — Shots were fired during a fight Tuesday night outside Macy’s at Northlake Mall, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said.

No one was struck by bullets and no injuries were reported, police said.

“It sounded like firecrackers because the mall is a little bit aways away,” a witness told Channel 9. “It was like eight or nine shots.”

Officials from Northlake Mall said they were devastated by the incident that took place on February 28, and grateful everyone was safe.

“We stand hand-in-hand with our valued retailers in prioritizing the safety and well-being of Mall employees and the many shoppers who enjoy our retail experience, and will continue to ensure that anyone who enters the Mall can do so comfortably,” said Northlake Mall spokesperson Allison Eckley.

“In the aftermath of these events, we are fully cooperating with the CMPD in their ongoing investigations and working closely with CMPD and other law enforcement and community leaders to ensure we are doing everything we can to support our employees and patrons – and to try to prevent this conduct from recurring. In addition to the robust police presence and 24-hour on-premises security that Northlake Mall already provides, we are rolling out additional security measures to further fortify the property and provide peace of mind to our community. Northlake Mall is unwavering in its mission to ensure the Mall is a premier retail destination―one that is unburdened by acts of violence and other misconduct that have no place in this wonderful community,” said Northlake Mall spokesperson Allison Eckley.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings said CMPD is working with Northlake Mall to make sure everyone is in a safe environment.

“The Northlake Mall has been a vigilant and dedicated partner on these incidents in ensuring a safe environment for our community. They are working on several safety measures through a continued partnership with CMPD,” said CMPD police chief Johnny Jennings. “Public safety remains our top priority, and we look forward to our continued work with the mall, area businesses, community members and others as we address these incidents,” said Jennings.

This is the second shooting at the mall in February.

Northlake said they are finalizing rollout plans for several new security measures that will start soon.

“We look forward to sharing specific details on these new plans in the coming days,” said Northlake Mall spokesperson Allison Eckley.
