WINGATE, N.C. — A man was injured when he fired his gun inside his truck next to the Wingate University baseball field Friday night, the Union County Sheriff’s Office said at a news conference. The incident caused a campuswide lockdown.
The man, later identified as Weston Parker Charles Vonegidy, drove erratically down Wilson Street and ran off the road at the baseball field. He then started firing his gun inside his pickup truck and was injured, Lt. James Maye said. It is not known if his injury was a gunshot wound.

Vonegidy then jumped out of his truck and ran onto the field. Authorities managed to subdue him and render aid. He was airlifted to a hospital Friday night and was in critical condition with head injuries.
A university spokesperson said the lockdown was lifted about an hour later. It happened during a non-university youth baseball game and didn’t involve a member of the Wingate University community.
There was an American Legion baseball game at the time of the shooting, the Wingate mayor said.
Wingate police have shared an update on the incident Friday night on their social media platforms.
According to police, this was an isolated incident, and the only injuries suffered were to the suspect.
Vonegidy is being charged with having a gun on school property, going armed to the terror of the public, assault by pointing a weapon, and multiple felony-controlled substance violations.
His bond was set at $200,000.
