Police shoot, kill suspect who stabbed police officer in South End

CHARLOTTE — One person was shot and killed by police after stabbing an officer in the neck in South End on Sunday morning.

Around 8 a.m. Sunday, police responded to a domestic disturbance call at The Penrose apartments. When they arrived, they heard noise and forced their way inside.

When police got inside, the suspect stabbed one of the officers in the neck. Seconds later, an officer shot the suspect.

The suspect died as a result, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department confirmed.

A police report Monday identified the suspect as Peter Corey. On Tuesday, police said the hurt officer was Officer Shawn McMichael and the officer who fired his gun was Officer Tyler Bourque.

Channel 9′s crew was first at the scene and saw two people being escorted to ambulances on stretchers.

CMPD confirmed McMichael and the female victim involved in the domestic disturbance call were taken to the hospital, but they were expected to recover from their injuries.

A South End resident said he was on his morning walk when he saw the police presence.

“Very surprising to see all the cop cars and the road closed. It’s super surprising to me, never in a million years would I expect a story like that,” he said. “This is usually one of the safest parts of Charlotte.”

Investigators found several guns inside the apartment.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is the lead agency in the incident.

CMPD said per standard protocol, Bourque and McMichael are on paid administrative leave while the investigation is underway.

McMichael returned home by Sunday evening, Chief Jennings said.

“This is a dangerous profession where our people put their lives on the line daily for this community, and these officers’ actions from this morning are nothing short of heroic,” Jennings said in a statement on Twitter. “I couldn’t be more proud of their swift action and sacrifice in a dangerous situation.”

A neighbor across from the complex said the incident was alarming.

“The first thing is concerned you know, that obviously means something’s not right,” Emma Arrowood said. “So then once you start finding out things like oh, there’s been gun violence involved, things like that, especially in such a packed apartment building you worry about -- could there have been people who have been hit who weren’t involved? Those types of things.”

Officers are now working with the property manager at Penrose to put together a residents meeting. An officer told Channel 9′s Almiya White the purpose of it is to address any concerns from residents.
