CHARLOTTE, N.C. — An off-duty Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office deputy was arrested late last night on suspicion of driving while impaired and carrying a concealed handgun.

DeWayne Huggins was driving his personal vehicle at the time of his arrest just after midnight Friday. The handgun was personally owned and was not an MCSO-issued service weapon, according to department officials.
As a result, Huggins has been fired from his position with MCSO.
He had been with the Sheriff’s Office since 2009 and was most recently assigned to the Arrest Processing Center.
