Sheriff: Northwest Cabarrus MS student threatened teacher with knife

CABARRUS COUNTY, N.C. — A 13-year-old female student at Northwest Cabarrus Middle School threatened a teacher with a knife on Friday, Cabarrus County Sheriff Brad Riley said.

The sheriff said there was a commotion in the classroom when the teenage pulled the knife on the teacher, which caused a different teacher to come in and subdue the student. Seconds later, the school resource officer came into the classroom and assisted.

The sheriff said an unloaded gun was also found inside the student's backpack.

Investigators conducted a search of the teenager's home and found firearms there.

The student is being charged in the incident. She is currently undergoing a mental health evaluation.

Her parents were charged with failure to secure firearms from minor. They have been released from jail.

"This type of behavior is not going to be tolerated, whether it's physical threat or copycat," Riley said. "We're going to hold people responsible to the fullest level of the law."

Riley said the investigation is ongoing.
