IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — A man was shot Monday after deputies said he opened fire on them during a welfare check at home in Iredell County.

Sheriff Darren Campbell said deputies responded to the house on Trivette Road in Union Grove after a family member of 59-year-old David Allan Nagy called asking for a welfare check on him.

When deputies got there, they said Nagy pulled out a pistol and told them he was going to kill them. He then went back into the home and barricaded himself inside.

The Iredell County Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team (SERT) along with the sheriff’s office Bearcat (Armored Personnel Carrier) were then called to the scene to help.

According to deputies, negotiators tried to get Nagy to surrender, but after about two hours, authorities threw OC gas into the home.

They said that’s when Nagy ran out of the back of the home armed with an AR-15-style weapon and pointed it at deputies before firing multiple shots. A SERT Team member shot at Nagy, striking him, according to Campbell.

Deputies said they rushed over to give aid even as Nagy continued to resist arrest. According to Campbell, a first responder was assaulted by Nagy while trying to help.

Nagy was taken to a local medical facility to be treated for his injuries before being booked into the Iredell County Detention Center.

He has been charged with felony assault with a firearm on a governmental official and communicating threats. More charges are expected.

“I am proud of the deputies who acted with courage and professionalism in the face of this threat. We are very fortunate to have had the equipment such as the Bearcat to protect the deputies,” Campbell said.

The deputy who fired the shot which struck Nagy was placed on administrative leave as per policy of the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation was requested by sheriff’s office to investigate the shooting. Deputies also launched an internal investigation into the incident.
