Pair charged after 2-year-old accidentally shoots himself with unsecured gun

IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — A 2-year-old is in the hospital after deputies said he accidentally shot himself Sunday night in Iredell County.

Deputies said they were called to a home on Old Wilkesboro Road in reference to a child being shot.

According to the sheriff, the child shot himself in the leg with a .380 caliber that was lying on a bed inside the home. The boy was taken to to Brenner Children’s Hospital in Winston-Salem for treatment and is expected to be OK.

25-year-old Erin Dreshon Vanderburg has been charged with misdemeanor failure to store firearms to protect a minor and misdemeanor child abuse. 19-year-old Alyssa Marie Lyons has been charged with misdemeanor child abuse.

Vanderburg was arrested Monday and taken to the Iredell County Detention Center.

Lyons has not yet been arrested.
