Severe weather causes hundreds of delays at Charlotte Douglas International Airport

CHARLOTTE — Severe weather hit the Charlotte area early on Sunday, impacting travel plans for thousands of travelers at Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

The National Weather Service issued severe thunderstorm warnings and a tornado warning until 10 a.m. for Mecklenburg County. That caused hundreds of flights to be delayed at CLT.

According to FlightAware, nearly 500 flights were reported to be delayed by 9:30 a.m., and 28 flights were canceled.

Airport officials knew the weather would impact travel on Saturday. The Federal Aviation Administration said ground stops were likely around 10 a.m. Sunday due to the weather.

According to Severe Weather Center 9, the storm was moving quickly from west to east. It’s likely to wrap up by Sunday afternoon.

The weather has impacted flights at airports across the East Coast, and it’s likely the ripple effect will last throughout the day.
