Several travelers in Rowan County being monitored as precaution after trips to China

ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. — A lot of people in our area are worried about the coronavirus, which has killed more than 1,000 people around the world.

Channel 9 has reported that doctors in Mecklenburg County are closely monitoring four people and on Tuesday, Rowan County Public Health officials said they were monitoring several travelers who have returned to the county from recent trips to mainland China.

The monitoring is a precaution. North Carolina does not have any confirmed cases of coronavirus.

The Rowan County Health Department has received notification of several symptom-free travelers returning home from mainland China, according to a news release. The Health Department is in contact with those people, providing information and guidance, and will monitor them for 14 days from their last possible exposure.

If they remain symptom-free after two weeks of monitoring, no further action will be required, health officials said.

The North Carolina Division of Public Health and the federal government is recommending self-monitoring with public health supervision for all travelers returning from mainland China, excluding Wuhan.

Health officials said the risk of coronavirus in North Carolina continues to be low.

The 2019 novel coronavirus, or 2019-nCoV, is an upper respiratory virus first identified in the city of Wuhan, China in late 2019. Travelers returning from Wuhan to the United States experienced symptoms beginning in January of this year.
