CHARLOTTE — A 44-year-old man was killed in a head-on crash Sunday on Parkwood Avenue by Optimist Hall in east Charlotte, police said.
Damon Jermaine Blackwell was driving a 2004 Mazda RX-8 was driving north at a high rate of speed when it went into a curve, crossed the double line and hit a 2017 Toyota Camry going in the opposite direction.
Blackwell, who was not wearing a seat belt, died at the scene. He may have been impaired. Toxicology results are pending.
The driver of the Toyota, Sidi Mahamed Amar Vi, was taken to Atrium Health - CMC Main with minor injuries.
Charlotte police responded to another fatal two-vehicle crash on Sunday where a 78-year-old woman died at a hospital.
A 2009 Cadillac DTS was driving east on Idlewild Road when the driver tried to make a left turn on the East Independence Boulevard on ramp.
The Cadillac turned in front of a 2017 GMC Sierra.
Frances Mobley was a passenger in the Cadillac and died later.
Impairment and speed do not appear to be a factor.
East Independence Boulevard near Conference Drive and Idlewild Road were closed for about five hours, finally reopening around 3 a.m.
Both crashes are under investigation.
