KANNAPOLIS, N.C. — Two acquaintances of a 17-year-old boy who was shot and killed near a Kannapolis elementary school have been charged in connection with his death, according to Kannapolis police.

Police said that around 2:15 p.m. on Nov. 11, someone shot into a car along East C Street near Carver Elementary School.

The 17-year-old victim, Logan Broome, was flown to the hospital but did not survive, officials said.

A pair of juveniles have been charged for their involvement in the shooting, police said on Saturday.

A 15-year-old was charged with discharging a firearm into an occupied property and a 17-year-old was charged with the same crime, as well as tampering with evidence.

Both teens have been located and are in a juvenile holding facility, police said.

On the day of the shooting, Chopper 9 Skyzoom flew over the scene and could see parts of the school’s entrance and yards around a home on East C Street were roped off with crime scene tape.

“It happened but for what reason, I can’t begin to say,” said a woman who has lived near the elementary school for 30 years. “A terrible gunshot, somebody done got hit. Not only hit, he got killed.”

Authorities said the shooting did not happen on school grounds and that no students or staff from the school were involved. There was no class because of the Veterans Day holiday.

Channel 9 learned that Broome was a student at A.L. Brown High School in Kannapolis and that several parents showed up at the school to pick their children up early. The principal said their absences would be excused.

“It was a shock yesterday when we saw it and you expect to see it everywhere else but not in your son’s school or your neighborhood,” said Steven Funderburk, an A.L. Brown High School parent. “We’re concerned for our son and how he’s feeling.”
