Several fire departments battle blaze at Cheraw meatpacking plant

CHERAW, S.C. — Fire departments from several counties were called Friday morning to battle a fire at a meatpacking plant in Cheraw.

Officials told Channel 9′s South Carolina reporter Greg Suskin that nine stations, including firefighters from neighboring Marlboro and Darlington counties, responded to the plant on Highway 1, just outside the town of Cheraw.

Nobody has been injured in the fire, which caused the roof of the building to collapse.

Fire officials told Channel 9 that beef and chicken processing takes place inside the small plant.

Crews said nobody was inside and that the plant was closed and empty when the fire started.

Investigators have not said yet how the fire may have started.
