Several area schools are on low-performing list, state report says

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — North Carolina released a list of low-performing schools across the state that could be part of the Innovative School District.

The goal of the report is to identify and help schools that are struggling, however, it comes with controversy.

Some are against the idea of the state taking over schools and handing them over to an outside group, such as a charter school operator, to operate them.

Nine schools in the area are among the lowest-performing schools in the state.

CMS:

• Ranson Middle
• Druid Hills Academy
• Bruns Avenue Elementary
• Allenbrook Elementary
• James Martin Middle

Iredell-Statesville Schools

• N.B. Mills Elementary

Anson County

• Wadesboro Elementary
• Primary Schools

Cleveland County

• Graham Elementary

The report has 69 schools on a Qualifying List.

Depending on how long the schools are on that Qualifying List, schools could be taken over by the state and become part of the Innovative School District.

CMS said it "has worked to identify schools with specific needs and is working to address those needs by providing targeted curriculum and other academic supports."
