SALISBURY, N.C. — Police are trying to track down the people who fire shots around 1 a.m. Thursday at the Lakewood Apartments off Statesville Boulevard in Salisbury.

Many residents on Lakewood Drive were sound asleep when the first rounds were fired.

“It was a lot of gunshots so I ran to the back of the room and I'm on the floor because it sounds like it was hitting the building,” one resident said.

Several groups starting shooting at each other with more than 10 shots fired into three apartments.

One woman said she was sleeping on the couch when a bullet pierced a back wall, traveled over her head and then out her living room wall.

A witness said the shootout may have started over an argument about a parking spot.

She claimed her friend came home to find someone parked in his spot.

"When we pulled up, we couldn't get in the parking space,” the witness, who did not want to be identified, said.

“We asked the girl to move. The girl would not move."

She said eventually, the girl moved her car, but the argument escalated when she said two guys came outside, began to argue and started shooting.

She said her friend got his gun and fired a shot into the air, and the two men ran off, one on foot, the other in a car.

No further information has been released.
