CHARLOTTE, N.C. — In a ceremony Friday, UNC Charlotte honored the men and women who rushed headlong into danger to stop the campus shooter April 30.
While some of the names are familiar – student Riley Howell and Sgt. Richard Gundacker helped take down the alleged gunman – a new tale of heroism came forth Friday.

Eric Dippold – an Army ROTC 49er Battalion cadet at UNC Charlotte – used his shirt and pants as bandages to help stem the bleeding for some of the victims.

“I’m a volunteer – that’s what I’m supposed to do,” Dippold said. “I’m supposed to fight for others.”
