CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Channel 9 has learned new details about the shooting death of a 7-year-old boy at a birthday party in southwest Charlotte over the weekend.
A search warrant Charlotte-Mecklenburg police released shows that a witness saw two men in the driveway at the house across the street from where the party was being held.
After the shots rang out, that witness saw the men running up towards the house and then out into the woods.
Channel 9 revisited the scene Tuesday morning, where there is a new makeshift memorial set up for Kevin Rodas.
Neighbors told Channel 9 police have been asking about paths through the woods that are across the street from where the boy was celebrating at a relative’s house.
Family members said the children were hitting a pinata at the party and that as soon as the pinata burst open they heard several gunshots, and Rodas was killed.
Two adults and another child were injured but survived.
Neighbors said the family who lived at the home has already moved some of their things out of their house, and believe it makes sense if someone used paths in the neighborhood -- especially since it was dark at the time of the shooting.
"No one saw a car leave,” said Juan Wilson. “No one saw a car speed off. So they could have fled on foot and no one see anything."
Neighbors also told Channel 9 that people are keeping quiet and not spending as much time outside since the shooting.
A GoFundMe account was set up for the boy's family to help with medical expenses and the funeral. Click here for more information.
