COROLLA, N.C. — A horse believed to be a part of the famous herd of wild horses that roams North Carolina’s northern Outer Banks was injured Friday after it was hit by a car.
On Sunday, authorities said they have identified the horse that was hit, and believe the injuries it sustained are relatively minor. Authorities had spent the better part of two days looking for the horse after it ran off from the accident scene Friday night.
According to the Corolla Wild Horse Fund Facebook page, the horse was hit by a vehicle on the beach around 9 p.m. Friday. The vehicle had significant damage, but Currituck County Sheriff’s Office deputies were unable to find the horse after an initial search.

The Currituck County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash.
