SALISBURY, N.C. — Officials told Channel 9 one person was killed in a crash involving a moped and a school bus in Salisbury early Thursday morning.
Emergency responders were called to the scene on West Innes Street just before 9 a.m.
Investigators told Channel 9 the driver of a Yamaha moped was killed after pulling out in front of the school bus.
Officials said the driver of the moped, David Andrew Fondren, 56, of Kannapolis, was traveling west on West Innes St crossed over the center line into the east bound bus’s lane of travel.
The moped hit the bus as the school bus driver tried to stop.
The driver of the moped was pronounced deceased on the scene.
The Rowan County school bus was a 2008 Thomas make and was number 28.
There was a monitor on the bus, but no students.
Officials with Rowan-Salisbury Schools said the bus was returning from dropping students off and that there were no students on the bus at the time.
The school district said it was cooperating with law enforcement investigation.
Officials said speed does not appear to be a factor and Fondren did have a helmet on.
At the completion of the accident investigation the case will be reviewed with the District Attorney’s Office. At this time there are no charges.
