Schools focus on getting vaccine as soon as possible

Some South Carolina teachers said they’re eager to get back to the classroom full time, but they need the vaccine to feel safe going back.

The Department of Health and Environmental Control signaled this week that phase 1B could start next week if they see less demand for the vaccine from people in the first phase.

Leaders at local schools spoke with DHEC officials Thursday about the vaccine plan.

They didn’t get a specific date when it would begin but were asked to prepare for it.

A Lancaster teacher told Channel 9 that the vaccine is critical to schools in 2021.

“I think it’s absolutely vital that we are in the early stages of getting this vaccine if they want to be able to keep schools open, which seems to be the major drive right now,” teacher Dana Dupre said.

South Carolina has about 50,000 teachers.
