School board member raises questions about immigration during mask discussion

UNION COUNTY, N.C. — Another local school board member has brought up illegal immigration at the Southern border during a discussion about wearing masks on campus.

Union County Board member Gary Sides discussed COVID-19 concerns surrounding immigrants living in or entering the U.S. illegally or without legal permission.

“Are these that are found or caught or give themselves up?” Sides said. “Are they tested for COVID? No. Are they vaccinated? No. What happens is they’re put on buses and transported all throughout our country. We could even have some here in Union County. If this isn’t a super spreader event, I don’t know what is.”

Sides talked about the district’s decision to make masks optional, which goes against the recommendation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that everyone should wear masks in schools to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
