Officials: 3 dead after fiery S.C. interstate crash

SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. — A fiery crash involving a tanker-truck and two cars killed three people Saturday morning, South Carolina Department of Transportation said.

The tanker-truck was carrying gas and diesel fuel and caught fire when it overturned on Interstate 26.

The fire was so intense it only left a burned-out shell of one SUV.

Officials closed both lanes of I-26 westbound near mile marker 17 in Spartanburg County after the wreck. One of the lanes reopened as of 11:30 Sunday morning. The second lane will reopen after the guardrail is replaced.

SCDOT crews removed chunks of asphalt as deep as 6 inches at the crash site because it was so badly damaged by the fire.
