SC family reunites with dog after getting separated in serious crash on I-77

EDGEMOOR, S.C. — A dog was reunited with his owners after he went missing more than a month ago.

Cash ran off when a detached trailer crashed into his owner’s truck on Interstate 77 in South Carolina. But neighbors were able to lure him into a cage and bring him home Sunday night.

Family members and neighbors pulled out all the stops to catch Cash. It took community support, a dog cage, and a casserole filled with treats to finally bring him home.

Channel 9′s Tina Terry learned they searched the woods for weeks to find him.

On July 8, a family and their best friend, Cash, were on I-77 headed to Carowinds. A white pickup truck lost a trailer that soared across the median, causing a chain-reaction crash.

Lee Wood and his wife, Tiffany Greene, were seriously hurt. Cash limped off into the woods.

“It’s been a process,” Wood said. “It’s been a lot of sleepless nights trying to recover.”

As they’ve recovered this past month, Cash was nowhere to be found.

“We kind of just put all of our heads together and we were just hoping and praying for a miracle,” neighbor Lindsey Skinner said.

Skinner lives in Edgemoor, not far from the woods where Cash was spotted last week. She said neighbors and family members put out cameras and treats to lure him out into the open.

“Christian made a casserole and named it a ‘casherole’ dish. It was just different foods in there,” she said.

And it worked. On Sunday night, Cash walked into the cage looking for food. Someone recorded video of a family member greeting him.

“When he did get in the cage, it took a minute and he realized who he was around,” Skinner said. “And then he was licking them and wagging his tail and he was very excited.”

Soon, Cash traveled to Leesville to be reunited with the rest of the family that tragedy tried to tear him away from.

“We’re just so happy he’s home, you know,” Tiffany Greene said. “When he walked through the door, we cried and laughed and he just licked us all, and he was just so excited to be home and we’re very grateful he’s home.”

The family said they never lost hope that Cash would be found. They say he’s been enjoying the air conditioning after spending a month out in the heat.

Lee Wood said the family is still recovering. He has several screws and plates in his arm and his wife is still wearing a neck brace.

The community has started a GoFundMe page to help them pay their medical bills.
