SBI investigating missing evidence at Stanly County Sheriff’s Office

STANLY COUNTY, N.C. — The State Bureau of Investigations has begun an inquiry into the Stanly County Sheriff’s Office, according to Sheriff Jeff Crisco.

Crisco said the SBI is conducting the investigation at his request.

An SBI spokesperson said the agency received requests from both the sheriff and the District Attorney to investigate evidence that was unaccounted for at the department. They said the investigation is ongoing and they cannot share any additional information.

The SBI did not have information about who was involved in the investigation, or what happened to cause Crisco to ask for it.

Over 11 years ago, the department conducted an internal investigation after it was tipped that a deputy was trafficking drugs. With assistance from the SBI, the SCSO arrested Floyd Simpson, 38, and his girlfriend, 35-year-old Tonya Benton, charged each with trafficking hydrocodone, conspiracy to traffic and possession with intent to sell or deliver.
