Sand cat kittens mark 3rd animal birth at North Carolina Zoo

ASHEBORO, N.C. — Officials at the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro announced the birth of three sand cat kittens on Friday.

The triplets were born on May 11 to two sand cats at the zoo named Sahara and Cosmo. The zoo keepers said the kittens were so small at birth that they could fit into the palm of your hand, according to WTVD News.

The kittens are the third animal born at the North Carolina Zoo in the last two weeks, WTVD reports. A baby giraffe was born on May 20, and a baby chimpanzee was born the following day.

The zoo says sand cats are small and known to hunt venomous snakes in the desert. Sand cats are also the only breed of cat known to live only in the desert, WTVD reports.

Zookeepers told WTVD they have not confirmed if the kittens are male or female yet, but a naming poll will be posted online soon.
