CHARLOTTE, N.C. — An employee is accused of stealing more than $229,000 from the Salvation Army of North and South Carolina.
A police report said the employee embezzled funds from the Salvation Army regional headquarters on Archdale Drive in southwest Charlotte for more than two years.
Channel 9 reached out to the Salvation Army and asked how the theft was uncovered. Officials would not comment on camera but did send a statement.
“All Salvation Army units, including The Salvation Army’s Divisional Headquarters, undergo regular audits for the purpose of maintaining financial accountability,” the organization said in the statement. “Such audits allow us to uncover cases of financial wrongdoing and turn the person responsible for it over to the authorities.”
Officials also said the Salvation Army is fully insured so none of the monies will be lost and the theft won't affect services.
The Salvation Army Divisional Headquarters in Charlotte is the central administrative office that provides support and service to 60 Salvation Army locations in North and South Carolina, including the Salvation Army of Greater Charlotte. Officials said The Salvation Army of Greater Charlotte was not impacted by the theft, and is not part of the police investigation.
Police have not made an arrest in the case.
The Salvation Army wouldn't comment specifically about the employee since that person has not been charged. Officials only confirmed that the person no longer works at the charity.
