SALISBURY, N.C. — St. Luke Baptist Church in Salisbury is celebrating revival with services each night this week. But what happened Tuesday night, especially in light of the tragedy in Charleston, had everyone on edge and now has officers showing up at services as well.
Pastor Arthur Heggins said Tuesday night the service was nearing its end when three strangers walked in, wearing white shirts and black ties. He said they sat quietly in the back, each with a shoulder bag. The pastor said even from where he was in the pulpit, he could see them handling the bags.
"I'm sure that no one in the church was comfortable," Heggins said. "(What) happened in Charleston is on everyone's mind and immediately they're going to think the worst and that's what happened here."
Church officials said they became most concerned during the altar call when one of the men got up and walked straight into the pulpit. At the same time the other two men changed their seats in the sanctuary, moving to the other side.
Heggins said ushers told the men they could stay - but their bags had to go. And he said that's when the men left.
"Scary, that's the word, it was real frightening," Heggins said.
Heggins said the incident may have been nothing, but members have no idea.
After nine people were murdered during a prayer service at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, members say churches like theirs have a heightened sense of fear that stands in contrast with their own mission.
"This is the house of worship and the doors are open to whosoever will," Heggins said.
