Safety groups, lawmakers investigate deaths linked to poppy seeds

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Poppy seeds are sold online and in the grocery store, but also could have morphine levels higher than a deadly dose of prescription drugs or even heroin.

Linda Golden's son Todd died in his sleep of a likely opioid overdose, but officials said no heroin or pills were found in his home.

Investigators said they found bags of poppy seeds, a water bottle with seeds, and liquid.

"I'm in shock. You know I'm just expecting to be able to pick up the phone and talking to him and that's not going to happen," Golden said. "The more I learn about it,  the angrier I become because it shouldn't have happened."
