ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. — Officials with the Rowan County Department of Social Services said there are currently 160 children are in their care.
But as of June 1, there were only 34 foster families in the county.
This has forced leaders to place some children in group homes or with families who live in other counties, which are farther away from their birth parents.

“We have fewer resources, fewer of our own families,” said Mica Enniss, director of Rowan DSS. “In Rowan County, we would like to have more Rowan County
foster families to care for the kids who do come into care.”
