CHARLOTTE — A Rowan County detention center worker who was involved in a hit-and-run crash Wednesday morning died Saturday afternoon, officials said.
Troopers said the crash happened before 7:30 a.m. Wednesday in the southbound lanes of I-85 prior to the Brookshire Freeway.

Major John Sifford with the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office said 25-year-old Kara Alsup had just gotten off work at 6 a.m. and was driving home when she was involved in the crash.
According to Trooper Ray Pierce, Alsup was driving a Toyota Corolla when she was sideswiped by a dump truck that did not stop. When she pulled over to call for help, a Chevy pickup truck rear-ended her at about 70 mph, Pierce said.
Alsup was taken to the hospital with very serious injuries and died three days later, troopers said. She started working at the detention center in June.
Alsup’s body was escorted Monday afternoon from the hospital in Charlotte to the Powlas-Staton Funeral Home. Arrangements for any services have not been set yet.
At the crash scene, Channel 9 crews could see a crumpled silver car on the interstate, near the median wall.
Troopers are looking for the dump truck that was involved, and released an image of a vehicle. The dump truck in the picture was not actually involved in the crash though, troopers said later in the day. Troopers are still searching for the dump truck that fled the scene.
It’s unclear if the driver of the pickup truck could face charges.
