Rowan County deputy fired for ‘use of force violation’

ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. — A local deputy was fired for a “use of force violation,” the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office told Channel 9′s Allison Latos last Wednesday.

Deputy Tyler Luby was terminated on Nov. 30, 2021, for the violation that happened on Nov. 16, 2021.

The incident happened after a chase involving Jeffrey Massey.

The Sheriff’s Office won’t share details, but Massey’s head was bandaged in his booking photo.

Luby was hired by the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office on Oct. 15, 2020. He had worked there for just over a year and was assigned to the patrol division.

His termination and the case have been forwarded to the Rowan County District Attorney.

Latos also learned that Rowan County Master Deputy Peoples was injured during the incident, suffering a partially amputated finger.

The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office and the District Attorney have also requested the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) to investigate the allegations.

No other details have been released.
