ROCK HILL, S.C. — A homeless shelter in Rock Hill opened Saturday in honor of a teen who died of cancer.

Emily Elkins, 16, had always dreamed of opening up a homeless shelter in the city, Channel 9's partners at the Rock Hill Herald report.

Emily donated thousands of dollars worth of clothes and other supplies to the homeless in Rock Hill and York County. She had started planning to build a shelter, but cancer took her life in March 2015.

Emily’s House volunteers held an open house Saturday and hope to help their first family by next week.

“We are so close – Emily wanted this more than anything,” Emily’s father, Paul Elkins, told The Herald. “She gave and gave in her life. Now, she will give back even after her life.”

Volunteers spent the last year fixing up a home at 314 Hasty Street in Rock Hill.

Rev. Jonathan Pannell, pastor at Emmanuel Church of the Nazarene, and his family donated the house to help see Emily’s dream realized.
