William “Willie” Burris started his career on the police force in 1969, the day after his 27th birthday. He became detective-sergeant in 1987 and was an important part of the Criminal Investigations Division until the day before he retired in 2010.

Burris was also well-known in the city of Rock Hill and was soft-spoken and friendly, but could also be stern, the department said.

“His calm temperament could often defuse tense situations. This attribute was often imparted on younger officers around him. Willie offered guidance, explaining the many changes in policing he had seen throughout his lasting career. For all those that served with Willie, it was truly a pleasure to have him as a co-worker, partner, and friend,” the Facebook post read.
