CHARLOTTE — A few new establishments joined the Charlotte-area restaurant scene in December. Among the additions were an upscale steakhouse in SouthPark, an eatery serving Indian street food at Optimist Hall and a new pizza concept for a popular South End brewery.
On the other end of the spectrum, a long-standing spot in South End — Big Ben British Restaurant & Pub — disclosed that it’s now looking for a new home after learning the property owner of its space at 2000 South Blvd. would not renew or extend the lease there past March 1.

December also brought with it continued obstacles for local restaurant operators due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic during what’s typically a bustling time amid the holidays. VBGB Beer Hall & Garden at the AvidXchange Music Factory, for instance, closed temporarily on Dec. 13 until at least Jan. 31 due to the pandemic limiting its operating capabilities. And other venues, such as Skylark Social Club in Plaza Midwood and Boatyard Lake Norman in Cornelius, have followed suit for reasons tied to the pandemic.
