INDIAN LAND, S.C. — Hundreds voiced their opinion on whether the community of Indian Land should become a town.
Indian Land sits 5 miles east of Fort Mill just across the South Carolina border.
Those attending Thursday’s meeting were split in their support.
Those in favor of becoming a town said they want more local control. Others said incorporating could lead to higher taxes, road maintenance and the cost of services, such as the Police Department.
“We need control of our own city and let somebody in Lancaster dictate what’s going to happen to us,” supporter Jennifer Threatt said.
“They had thoughts about taxes being too much,” said Tom Hoots, who opposes incorporation. “Third level of government or second level of government, what that might cost.”
A vote is scheduled for next month.
