Residents in Concord neighborhood evacuated after crews respond to gas leak

CONCORD, N.C. — Residents in a Concord neighborhood were evacuated from their homes early Saturday morning after firefighters responded to an active gas leak.

It started around 7 a.m. at the corner of Arbor Street and Lake Concord Road.

Concord Fire told Channel 9 the situation started after they received a call about a transformer on fire.

When crews arrived, they said they found a gas leak outside a home and a utility pole on fire.

Authorities said there is minor damage to a house that caught fire, but no injuries were reported. Firefighters also rescued four dogs from inside the house, who were at risk for carbon monoxide poisoning.

"Anytime there's gas involved, I mean it's just like fire," Allyson Sigmon from Concord Fire said. "Gas and fire can be deadly and in this incident, we were able to evacuate everyone. Everyone's safe, everyone went home, and we couldn't ask for anything better."

Officials said Arbor Street was shut down and residents were evacuated while crews worked to stabilize the gas line.

Concord Fire said the gas line was clamped off shortly after 9:30 a.m.

Dominion Energy is working on repairs in the area and will be conducting an investigation to find out what caused the gas leak.
