RALEIGH — Day care centers in four North Carolina counties -- three counties in the Triangle area -- are not passing the grade when it comes to lead in their water.

Lead is one of the leading causes of intellectual and developmental disabilities in children under six.
The study, conducted by a Triangle mom who is an environmental chemist, has resulted in a proposed rule to test water at every daycare center in the state.
"We found that nearly all child care centers and schools had at least one tap that had detectable lead," researcher Jenny Hoponick Redmon said.
