Report questions Duke Energy’s forecast for North Carolina’s energy demand

North Carolina is preparing for a major increase in electricity demand, with large energy users such as data centers expected to account for most of that growth.

According to a state-commissioned report, about 85% of the projected increase in electricity demand is tied to large users, including data centers.

Duke Energy has its own plan to meet the growing demand. But the governor’s Energy Policy Task Force has examined alternatives that could potentially lower costs and reduce emissions.

The task force’s analysis raises questions about Duke Energy’s demand forecast, finding the utility is projecting significantly more electricity demand than the amount associated with projects that have already taken steps to connect to the power grid.

The difference could have major implications for how much new electricity generation and infrastructure North Carolina needs to build — and how much customers ultimately pay.

The debate comes as state leaders weigh how to meet future energy needs while balancing reliability, affordability and environmental concerns.
