Renters blame broken garage door at NoDa apartments for car break-ins

CHARLOTTE — Renters said their apartment complex’s garage door in NoDa has been broken for so long, people keep breaking into their cars.

A Channel 9 viewer sent pictures saying they’re from the Bainbridge apartments on North Davidson Street.

One renter said he was heading to Mother’s Day brunch when he found someone had broken into his car. Another said it was the latest in her security concerns and she broke her lease.

“The only thing right now that’s keeping people from getting inside of our apartment through the garage is two doors with fob entry. But neither of them work,” she said.

“Locking our car doors clearly didn’t help much,” the other renter said. “My car was locked. They just smashed my car window.”

The complex sent a statement to Channel 9 saying the garage door was repaired Monday.

“The well-being of our residents is our top priority,” the statement reads. “The garage door was repaired today and is opening and closing properly.

“We contacted CMPD the night the garage door broke and they have been driving through the garage twice a night and had a vehicle parked overnight for an additional level of precaution while the garage was inoperable. In addition to these measures, folks should always remain aware of their surroundings and double-check that their vehicle is securely locked.

“Our office has not been notified by any residents about entrance doors not closing or working properly. Our maintenance team is checking all doors today and, if there is an issue, it will be addressed right away.”
