CHARLOTTE — This week, we’re getting a first look inside the historic Carolina Theatre in Uptown Charlotte.
Work on the 97-year-old theater started in 2018 and now, nearly $90 million later, it is almost complete.
Our news partners at the Charlotte Observer report that crews have spent the last six years removing asbestos and lead paint.

Work is expected to wrap up sometime in January, and the theater will start hosting events next spring.
The building at 230 N. Tryon Street opened in 1927 and underwent a major renovation in 1961. It closed in 1978 and fire struck the rear of the building in late 1980, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Historic Landmarks Commission.
The Carolina Theatre was designated as a historic landmark in 1983.
