Remains identified as woman who was stabbed to death after vanishing from truck stop

YORK COUNTY, S.C. — Authorities said Monday that remains found in Chester County have been identified as a woman who vanished from a York County truck stop in May.

21-year-old Lillian Payne was last seen on May 13 at the Flying J on Mount Holly Road in Rock Hill. Investigators believe she left with someone in a green caravan.

Deputies confirmed Monday that those remains found in July by a man bulldozing land on Cameron and Howe roads in Chester County have been identified as Payne.

After an autopsy, investigators determined Payne was stabbed to death. Officials said there was jewelry that belonged to her found with the remains.

Payne’s death is still considered an active homicide investigation. No arrests have been made.
