CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Plans for more apartments in the farther reaches of the Charlotte region have unfolded in recent weeks.
That includes a mixed-use project in downtown Hickory, a city about 54 miles northwest of Charlotte that’s undergoing a revitalization centered around a system of urban greenways. That project, which will add 95 apartments above street-level commercial space, is expected to start in the fall.

Also this fall, about 29 miles north of Charlotte, another mixed-use development including apartments is expected to get underway in Mooresville, transforming a 126-year-old textile mill in that community’s downtown.
Closer to center city, a 309-unit apartment complex along the light-rail line in Optimist Park opened in August, and work continues on 91 “micro-units” as part of the RailYard development in South End.
