CHARLOTTE — A man is on a miraculous road to recovery after a bicycle accident left him with a severe brain injury in the University City area.

Pravinraj Radha was given a 1% chance to survive following the wreck five months ago.

He was riding his bike in May along Senator Royall Drive near University City when he lost control and crashed.

His friend, Paru Subramonian, said Radha wasn’t wearing a helmet and suffered major damage to several parts of his brain.

“It was really not at all hopeful because he didn’t have much chance at that time,” Subramonian said.

Radha, who was living in Charlotte on a work visa, was transported to India weeks after the crash so he could be closer to his wife and parents.

He was still in a coma and not responsive, but doctors started him on several types of therapy.

“All of a sudden, one day he woke up and he started talking,” Subramonian said. The moment happened months after Radha arrived in India.

“He’s talking, he’s walking and he’s responding to commands,” Subramonian said. “When we compare it to the person he was five months ago and to the person he is now, it’s a very drastic change.”

Radha’s family said they never lost hope and they thank their faith for getting him through the roughest time.

“Hope is seeing the light even if you’re surrounded by darkness,” Subramonian said. “I totally believe that if you hold onto that tiny ray of hope, you will see the results one day or another.”

Radha still has a long road to recovery, his family said. He still has cognitive challenges, such as memory loss. However, his family said doctors believe he could go home in two months if he continues to show progress.
