The family of Janisha Fonville spoke at the event.

Read our past coverage on Janisha Fonville's story:

Last month, Fonville, 20, was shot and killed by a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officer during a domestic violence call.

Police said Fonville was armed with a knife.

"Unfortunately, they took a great girl," said Fonville's father Mikal Bey. "Janisha was a great girl, loved kids, but she got lost."

The group was asking officers to use Tasers and other methods of non-deadly force before using a gun.

CMPD also focused on its relationship with the community during a separate event in Cotswold on Sunday.

During the town hall meeting, CMPD Chief Rodney Monroe and Mecklenburg County Sheriff's deputies met with more than 100 community members.

They discussed how officers and citizens can work together.
