Rallies, vigils to honor George Floyd in the Charlotte area

People inspired to action as protesters march through different areas in Charlotte (WSOC)

For more than a week, rallies and vigils have been held across the Charlotte area honoring George Floyd and pushing for justice in his name.

Here is a list of demonstrations and vigils that we know about in the area:

Peaceful Rally of Solidarity for George Floyd

Sunday, June 7 at 3 p.m.

Matthews Town Hall

Opening Prayer: Rev. Dr. Chuck Wilson, Matthews United Methodist Church

Speakers will include Matthews Mayor John Higdon, Matthews chief of police Butler High School teacher Ms. Jenna Tomlinson as well as voices from the audience.

Cabarrus County Prayer Vigil

Sponsored by: Black Political Caucus of Cabarrus County and Community Partners

Sunday, June 7 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. in front of the Cabarrus County Courthouse

Organizers asked demonstrators to please wear masks and gloves; candles will be provided.

East Spencer Protest

Sunday, June 7 at 4 p.m.

Demonstrators are meeting at Royal Giants and the protest will end at Dunbar. Organizers said they are looking for volunteers to bring coolers, ice and water.

Huntersville Protest

Sunday, June 7 at 4:30 p.m. at Veteran’s Park

Huntersville town officials said they expect heavy traffic in the area, especially around Highway 115 at Gilead and Main Street between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Ballantyne Family and Kidz March for Justice

Sunday, June 7 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Ballantyne Hotel

This is a family friendly event and will start and event at the monument pillar closest to the Ballantyne Hotel and walk along Ballantyne Commons Parkway to Community House Road.

Organizers ask those who attend to wear a mask and keep social distance.

We Don’t Stop -- Peaceful Protest in Remembrance of George Floyd

Sunday, June 7 at 6 p.m. at Romare Bearden Park

Gastonia Vigil for George Floyd

Sunday, June 7 at 6 p.m. at the Rotary Pavilion

Organizers said faith leaders and community organizers will be in attendance as well as the groups who have been leading protests to hold a vigil for George Floyd.

Charlotte Uprising -- Charlotte Remembers George Floyd

Sunday, June 7 at 7 p.m. in Marshall Park (800 E. 3rd Street)
