Queens University moving athletic programs to NCAA Division I

CHARLOTTE — Queens University of Charlotte announced on Friday the school’s athletic program will be moving to NCAA Division I to compete in the ASUN conference, according to a release from the school.

The university’s board of trustees voted unanimously to accept an invitation to the conference and begin the four-year transitional period into Division I athletics. The move will formally begin on July 1.

“Queens has a championship record in athletics as well as in academics,” said Jeff Brown, chairman of the board of trustees. “This move to Division I will allow our student athletes to compete and showcase their talents at the highest level.”

The Royals will be the 15th member of the ASUN Conference headquartered in Atlanta. Queens will be the only North Carolina school competing in the conference.

The university said more information would be released at a press conference at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, May 10.
