Quail Hollow course to close for upgrades after Wells Fargo Championship

CHARLOTTE — Rory McIlroy and friends will spend next week at Quail Hollow Club as the PGA Tour returns for the Wells Fargo Championship. But soon after the world’s best golfers finish the tournament, the course will be undergoing some nips and tucks as part of a $3 million facelift.

Club President Johnny Harris said that while the course is in great shape for next week’s tournament, it’s time to make periodic upgrades that will improve the layout for future events, including the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship and the PGA Championship in 2025.

“We have a situation where we have a mutation in some of our greens that has necessitated us changing the grass on the greens,” he said. “It’s not necessarily a major change to the greens. They’ll, pretty much, look like and feel the same.”

With that in mind, Quail Hollow is going to redo all tees and greens on the course, and, for the first time in 16 years, overhaul the bunkers.

Along with those improvements, the club will install new drainage systems and replace the fabric in the liners around the course.

“It will make the course a better course for our members, and also a better course for the tournament,” Harris said.

After the Wells Fargo Championship ends May 7, Quail Hollow will have a members’ tournament the following week. After that, the course will close for three to four months for the projects above to be completed.
