Public paychecks: Here are the highest-paid North Carolina government employees

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte Business Journal has compiled the annual salaries for more than 86,000 North Carolina state government employees, over 100 of whom make more than $200,000.

From medical directors to investment managers, the state’s average salary was $48,813 in August. That average takes into account salary information for 68,363 employees who made more than $25,000.

Of those, 102 made $200,000 or more, and the state’s highest-paid employee made nearly $300,000. Larry Wheeler, director of the N.C. Museum of Art, announced last year that he is retiring in November. His current salary is $295,788.
