Providence High tops ranking of Charlotte-area high schools with best SAT scores

The SAT is a national college admissions examination that evaluates students in mathematics and evidence-based reading and writing, or ERW.

The 21,416 members of the class of 2021 who took the SAT test in North Carolina had an average total score of 1147 out of a possible 1600. The 48,667 members of the class of 2021 who tested in South Carolina had an average total score of 1028.

CBJ has compiled a countdown of Charlotte-area public high schools by their average total SAT scores among graduating seniors in 2021. Included in the ranking are public and charter schools in Cabarrus, Gaston, Iredell, Mecklenburg and Union counties in North Carolina and Lancaster and York counties in South Carolina with 10 or more graduating seniors who took the SAT test in their junior or senior year of high school.

Average total scores at six schools within the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools system, including two early college programs, and three schools within the Union County Public Schools system topped 1200. Also scoring above 1200 were graduating seniors at Gaston County Public Schools’ Highland School of Technology and at Community School of Davidson, a charter school.

CMS’ Providence High School had the highest average score locally, with 1248.
