Program helps young Black men rise above poverty

CHARLOTTE — According to a report, Charlotte ranks last among major cities for children born into poverty with the ability to come out of it.

Former President Barack Obama founded My Brothers Keeper to build support in communities for young Black men and to clear a pathway for opportunities.

“My Brother’s Keeper isn’t coming with a massive check,” said Michael Smith, with the Obama Foundation and national director for the My Brother’s Keeper Alliance. “You don’t sign up and then, all of a sudden, have the resources that you need. These are folks that are willing to roll up your sleeves, do the hard work, and figure out how we can combat system racism and make sure that our young people’s dreams matter.”
