CHARLOTTE — The family of a man killed on the job in northeast Charlotte is sharing a message with the community as his accused murderer is expected to face a judge Monday.

Marquell Pettiford was arrested Friday and charged in connection with the murder of 29-year-old Anthony “A.J.” Zellars Jr.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said Zellars was shot three times in the head in the parking lot of Townes Apartments along Arrowhead Road on November 20.

Zellars was working for a parking enforcement company at the time of the shooting. His family released a statement to Channel 9 this week:

“The journey to justice for our son is not over. We are thankful to CMPD for progress that has led to an arrest in our son’s murder. We are also thankful to everyone who called in tips to CMPD crime stoppers and spread the word on social media. We pray for swift justice and full accountability!”
